Barrhead Travel has won the Best Large Agency in Scotland award at a major industry event.

The leading independent travel group was awarded the accolade at the Agent Achievement Awards – for the 16th consecutive year.

It was a double celebration for the travel group as employee Roddie MacPhee was also presented with a prestigious Outstanding Contribution to the Industry Award.

Barrhead Travel was recognised by a panel of industry leaders for its continued growth, range of products and customer-focused approach – which chief executive Sharon Munro said is an integral part of the company’s success.

Chief executive Sharon Munro said: “It is an absolute honour to win this award and a real compliment for everyone connected to the company.

“As a company, we continue to grow and diversify, making sure we deliver the best possible holiday options to our growing customer base. In such a competitive market it’s great to be rewarded for our efforts.

“To top off a great evening, it was also a pleasure to see Roddie MacPhee collect a much deserved Outstanding Contribution award. It is a fantastic achievement and testament to his dedication and hard work over the years.”

Roddie MacPhee, who combines his role at Barrhead Travel with being the Scottish Chairman for ABTA, said: “This is an incredible honour – I genuinely had no idea this award was on the cards. I’ve always worked hard and tried my very best to deliver the best possible service to customers – so to be recognised by the industry is fantastic. It’s undoubtedly a career high.”

Barrhead Travel has grown into one of the UK’s leading independent travel groups, providing a comprehensive choice of travel across its network of 61 stores in the UK. The travel group is renowned for the expertise of its consultants, who have specialist destination knowledge spanning cruise and long-haul, to beach holidays and city-breaks.

Roddie MacPhee should also be extremely proud of his Outstanding Contribution award. It’s a vote by his industry colleagues which makes it extra special.

“The awards continue to go from strength-to-strength as we recognise the best agents and agencies in the country, whether they are on the high street, in call centres, online or based from home.”

NOTES TO EDITOR

About Barrhead Travel:

Founded in 1975 by an ex-bank worker, Bill Munro, and operating from an unremarkable shop in the south Glasgow suburb of Barrhead with just one member of staff and a YTS, Barrhead Travel's first steps in the travel business were tentative and small. But fast-forward and the company has grown into a multi-faceted travel giant with 850 staff in 56 locations – and is one of the largest and most successful travel agencies in the UK.

In 2002, Barrhead Travel opened the first city centre travel superstore in the UK, right in the heart of Glasgow. One of the largest travel agencies in Europe, it was also the first “experience” store in Scotland. In 2012 the company opened a 100-seat contact centre in Cumbria.

Barrhead Travel has expanded from a traditional ‘bucket and spade’ travel agent to a multi-faceted travel group chartering its own flights, offering bespoke holidays to all corners of the globe, running an in-house training facility, employing specialist consultants providing expert advice in areas such as long haul, cruise and ski holidays and promoting youth employment through its apprenticeship scheme.

The company has won many awards over the years, including Top UK Travel Agency and Best Travel Agency in Scotland for 12 years running and was awarded a position in The Sunday Times Fast Track 100. Barrhead Travel was also named Employer of the Year at the Scottish Business Awards in 2012 and has been recognised as one of the Best Companies to Work For for the last five years.

The firm successfully completed the acquisition of UK-based cruise agency ‘The Holiday Specialists’ in December 2012, a deal worth in the region of £3 million. In addition the company launched its first trade-focused sub-brand, Brilliant Travel in August 2013. The new brand will oversee expansion of its managed service branches, home-based travel advisors and corporate partnerships.
